Six minutes with a sheet of paper and a pencil will tell you more than a size chart. Here is how to measure your feet, and how each of our styles is sized.

Measure in the evening

Feet swell as the day goes on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests buying shoes toward the end of the day. Measure in the evening, wearing the kind of sock you will wear with the shoe, or none if you wear the pair bare.

Measure both feet

Stand on a sheet of paper with your weight on the foot. Mark the back of your heel and the tip of your longest toe, which is not always the big toe, and measure the distance. Do the same for the other foot. The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society advises fitting the larger foot.

Leave room in front of your toes

With your weight on the shoe you want about three eighths to half an inch, roughly a finger’s width, between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. The heel should not slip as you walk, and a shoe that pinches should not be bought on the hope that it will stretch.

A note on heels

Our platform loafers and platform Mary Janes have a 2.7-inch block heel over a 1.3-inch platform. The AAOS names under two inches as the heel height to aim for and suggests a platform under the toe box for anyone who wears a higher heel. The AOFAS adds that a wider heel base is steadier than a narrow one, and that heels are best kept off wet or uneven ground. We print our heights so you can decide for yourself.

Water shoes and flip-flops

Our water shoe sizes are printed for women and men at once. Flip-flops come in paired men’s sizes. The American Podiatric Medical Association suggests checking that your foot does not hang over the edge and that the sole bends at the ball of the foot rather than folding in half.

A size is a starting point, not a promise. Feet swell over the day, one foot is often longer than the other, and the same number fits differently from one shoe shape to the next. Measure both feet late in the afternoon, fit the longer one, and leave about a finger’s width in front of your longest toe.
